About Us

Brew Free or Die (BFD) is New Hampshire’s first, and most active, homebrew club. BFD was started in January of 1991 by several home brewers, intent on establishing a homebrew club in New Hampshire to ‘host’ the American Homebrewers Association conference held in June of that year in Manchester.

Meetings are usually on the second Friday of the month, mostly in the southern New Hampshire area, and usually held from 7 PM to 10 PM. Please see the Calendar link at left for a current schedule of meeting times and locations. We welcome new members and those interested in joining the club as well.

Meetings start by covering club business: announcing upcoming competitions, congratulating winners of past competitions, and planning bulk purchases of supplies and equipment. We also feature a short discussion of a brewing technique or beer style. The meeting then turns to socializing and sampling of some of our best home brewed beers.

BFD’s membership is currently around 100 members, representing all levels of experience and expertise:

  • beginners
  • experts
  • all-grain brewers
  • extract brewers
  • professional brewers

The one common thread among our membership is an enthusiastic interest in home brewed beer, ciders and meads. Many of our members have won awards for their brewing. BFD members have served as both judges and stewards at numerous regional and national competitions including MCAB, Sam Adams Patriot Homebrew, and Sam Adams Longshot competitions. Among the BFD membership are several BJCP judges ranking from Grand-Master to Recognized.

BFD hosts an annual competition, the New England Regional Homebrew Competition (NERHBC), with all net-proceeds from the event going to charity. Since 2011 we donated at least $3,000 each year. The American Cancer Society is our current beneficiary with an annual donation made in honor of two late founders of this competition – BFD member Don Merkey and Southern Maine Homebrewer member Steve Loignon.

Our famous December holiday party is one of our biggest events, with incredible food and the finest homebrews in New England. Add it all together, and you’ll find this club to be the most event rich and informative brewing club in the area.
